What is the work, exactly?
‘Finish the project’ is not a single action. It may contain research, a decision, a draft and a conversation with someone whose answer is still missing. When you sit down without distinguishing them, the first difficulty can look like poor concentration. An alternative starting point is to define what the next period of work is supposed to produce. This is an editorial workflow method, not a test of cognitive function.
Give the work a boundary
Write an observable outcome for the work period: compare two proposals, outline one section or list the unresolved assumptions. Then identify which resources are needed and which messages can wait. Boundaries help make a practical agreement with yourself and, where relevant, colleagues. Their purpose is not to guarantee uninterrupted focus. It is to make interruptions and competing obligations visible enough to negotiate.
Record the interruption without judging it
When the work stops, note why. Was information missing? Did an urgent responsibility intervene? Did the task become ambiguous? The answers point to different changes. A missing document requires access, while an unclear objective requires a decision. Reducing every interruption to ‘distraction’ can hide the action that would actually help. Review the pattern before selecting a solution.
Bring conditions back into the discussion
NHLBI describes how sleep deficiency can interfere with focusing and everyday functioning. [1] That is one relevant context, not a diagnosis of any individual’s work difficulty. If a change in concentration is persistent or concerning, seek appropriate assessment. For ordinary work design, start with a concrete task, a realistic interval and a review of what interrupted it. Better organisation is useful precisely because it can be examined rather than merely asserted.
